Young People Having a Say

Newport Youth Council is all about 'Young People Having A Say'. It provides opportunities for young people in Newport to have a voice on issues that affect them, and to become actively involved in local decision-making.

Young people receive many services, for example, education, youth and leisure facilities, health services, crime and safety services, and developments around the environment and local communities.

Decisions are always being made about what these services will be like, whether young people need them and how they can access them. A lot of the time, if young people are involved in helping to make these decisions, these services can be more effective and relevant to what young people need and want.

Young people's ideas and opinions are really important in helping to shape the future, in helping to design new services and make existing services work better. Through Newport Youth Council, young people can have a say in this decision-making, they can raise their own issues, discuss ideas and put forward suggestions to the ˜decision-makers' in the Council, the Health Board, the Police etc via the Young Peoples Partnership.

Newport Youth Council is open to all young people aged 11-25 who are interested in representing the views of young people in Newport. It is an opportunity for young people to express their views, influence changes in their communities and take responsibility for decisions that affect their lives.

Newport Youth Council Management Committee meet once a month in the Riverfront to deal with issues important to young people such as education, housing, health, leisure, crime/safety and youth facilities. NYC has links to the decision makers such as City Councillors, Local Authority staff, the Police and the Local Health Board etc.
