The Empty Shop Project - Eye Create
Newport Youth Service has created an exhibition called ‘Eye Create’ to celebrate the wealth of artwork created by the young people of Newport.
The Empty Shop Project is part of Newport Festival 2010 and is a community arts programme that turns vacant retail space into creative workspaces to display local artistic talent. The project aims to regenerate the city centre and display local artists work.
Eye Create is a mixed media exhibition and has come from different projects within Newport Youth Service, such as the Youth Work in schools, ALF (Alternative Learning Forum), the Information Shop, and Youth Clubs across Newport.
To highlight the diverse range of artistic mediums, the Empty Shop Project is proud to display a ‘totem pole’ which has been designed and built by the students of Duffryn High School. This is an expression of the group’s individual motifs, ranging from family to technology and how this has an impact on their lives.
The young people have been inspired by their environment and use art as a means of creative expression. One of the young people who took part in the project via the Information Shop has used art as an outlet for the frustrations she felt within her personal life.
The young people involved in the project are looking forward to having their work on display and feel it is a great honour and achievement to have their work exhibited in a public area.
The ‘Eye Create’ project was exhibited at the old National Express office at the bus station on Lower Dock Street. Well done to all the young people involved!
