SuperDragons set to invade Newport!

This summer 50 SuperDragons, and 48 smaller dragons, will be decorated and painted by local artists. The event, known as SuperDragons, is being hosted by Newport council as part of the celebrations for the 2010 Ryder Cup golf tournament.

The five-foot-high, six-foot-long and two-foot-wide SuperDragon sculptures weigh 60kg, are made of fibreglass and will be decorated with paint and various materials chosen by the artist, before being given a coat of waterproof varnish to protect them from the elements.

Once decorated, the SuperDragons will be strategically placed to highlight historical or architectural interest at various locations throughout Newport for a 10-week period. The aim being not only to display the creative talent of local artists but also both residents and tourists to discover some of Newport’s hidden gems... Project co-ordinator Florence Martellini said: "We hope the dragons will bring adventure, colour and life to the streets of Newport and will stop people in their tracks and get them talking."

The chosen artists started work in late April and the dragons will go on parade throughout the city and surrounding area in late July. The SuperDragons trail is set to be one of the major highlights of the Newport Festival 2010, after which the SuperDragons will be auctioned and money donated to the wildlife charity Bornfree.
