Oscar's ceremony for film-makers
The First Films event now in its third year recognised the achievements of young people under 21 from the Newport area in a recent "Oscars" ceremony, organised by Arts Development, Pili Pala Films and The Riverfront Education.
Nine talented groups produced a variety of short features, some thought-provoking, some entertaining and others displaying innovative flair.
Underwood Youth Club received the judges' award with the animation Coming Alive.
A group from the Hope Centre in Somerton won double honours with Kill It Before It Kills U - a hard-hitting story aimed at reducing arson calls in their area and dedicated to the memory of former firefighter Ryan Buckley.
They won the award for the best community film and were also presented with the audience choice award by Newport's mayor Cllr Glyn Jarvis.
A special award was given to 12-year-old Ben Somersall in recognition of his efforts even though his film was too long to be considered for the main ceremony.
As well as enjoying the films, the audience were also treated to excellent performances by local young artists and a special guest, Akil the MC accompanied by Newport DJ Jamie Winchester.
Here at CLIC we hope to gain permission to include the short films in our INFO section to ensure that the groups achievements reach a wider audience across Wales.
Throughout October half term, the Riverfront will also be offering film related workshops, including Make Up for Screen and Story Boarding. The workshops and film screenings are £2 each, or £3 to attend a workshop and watch a film in the cinema.
