Got The Square Factor?
Are you in a band or are you a solo performer? Fancy putting your talents before a very large crowd?
On Sunday 18 July 2010 the centre of Newport will host a free music event in memory of John Sicolo, the founder of TJ's music venue.
Organised by TJ's and Voice magazine in association with Newport City Homes, John Frost Square is the outdoor location for TJ's In The Square, where the likes of GLC, Flyscreen and Sick Livers will perform to a no doubt capacity crowd.
Fifteen bands are due to play, of which fourteen have been booked, but the promoters are looking for a final act to complete the line-up. This is where you may come in.
If you are aged 18 or under and make music of any description, you can put yourself forward and potentially be added to the bill.
To enter, send a demo (no matter how roughly produced as they are looking for raw talent) or even just a link to your MySpace page, and a panel of industry experts will shortlist ten acts to go forward.
If you are one of the ten acts selected, you will then go on to a two-day rock school in Newport, where the industry experts will watch you perform and give you master classes in subjects like musicianship, sound engineering, interview skills, look and style and more. You will also get a photoshoot.
At the end of the two days, you will perform, X Factor stylee, in front of a panel of judges. The band who have benefitted most from the advice given will win.
The awesome list of prizes for the winner(s) reads like this:
- A support slot at the July 10th gig
- A full studio photoshoot with a professional photographer
- A logo designed for you or your band
- An afternoon of recording in a studio
- Six t-shirts with your logo on
- An interview with Voice magazine
You will also be captured on film at the July gig as part of a documentary that's being made and publicity shots being taken.
This is probably one of the best opportunities for young musicians Young Newport has ever seen, so you'll probably be wanting to know how to enter? The link below will take you to the application form. Closing date for entries is Tuesday 1 June at 9am. The final ten bands will be informed on Thursday 3 June, with the winner being announced on Sunday 20 June.
The competition is open to all people under 18 - not just those in Newport.
Good luck!

Put an ad up or see who's after a bassist on the notice boards in your local music and record shops - try Spillers and GM Music in Cardiff. You never know!
