Fun and free! Just some of the words to describe the Newport Junior Explorer project. It is a unique project designed to encourage the visitors and residents of Newport to explore and enjoy some of the city’s best known tourist attractions.

The Explorer project has been created for parents and children to find out together Newport’s rich cultural, environmental and historical heritage at little or no cost. Each of the 6 partner sites Tredegar House, Caerleon National Roman Legion Museum, Newport Wetlands Reserve, Fourteen Locks,Belle Vue Park and the Newport Museum and Library will offer fun exploration activity sheets, both in English and Welsh, all aimed at giving a taste of what is available at each venue. Both you and your child will be encouraged to find answers and complete easy puzzles as you tour the sites in order. The rewards for the passport holder will be: stickers to collect and fun gifts made from recycled materials.

Where and when does it start?

It all started at Tredegar House on March 31st and lasts for a year. You can register any time during the year and pick up a passport. Your family will enjoy completing the route by visiting all 6 sites at your leisure, whether it takes you weeks or months. We expect that this project will give you a taste of what the sites have to offer and make you want to revisit many of them for further exploration.

The project is designed to create an awareness of issues such as recycling and health, as well as fostering a pride and an ownership of Newport’s past. The project has been promoted and funded by Newport City Council’s Countryside Service, in partnership with the Countryside Council of Wales (CCW) Welsh Assembly and the Aneurin Bevan Health Board (Going For Gold).

Each of the attractions below will offer fun exploration activity sheets (available in English and Welsh) aimed at giving a taste of what is available at each venue:

1. Tredegar House

2. Caerleon National Roman Legion Museum

3. Belle Vue Park

4. Newport Wetlands Reserve

5. Fourteen Locks

6. Newport Museum and Library
